Lucy and Angus met at 17, both set on a future in medicine. Their paths first crossed on a residential course at the University of Nottingham – and it didn’t take long to realise how much they had in common. “We were born a day apart and shared a love of running, surfing and sailing – we’re both happiest in or on the water, preferably cold,” says Lucy. “We also grew up spending summers on neighbouring beaches in Cornwall – me on Harlyn, Angus on Trevone.”

After eight years together, the couple spent two years working and travelling in New Zealand. “Angus’s proposal, the week before we returned home, was a fitting conclusion to the happiest chapter of our lives,” reflects Lucy.

Keen for their wedding to reflect their shared love of Cornwall and the outdoors, they chose St James the Great Parish Church in St Kew for their ceremony, followed by a marquee reception at Roscarrock. The landscape shaped the details – from inky blue, hand-stamped invitations to stationery by their friend Becky featuring watercolour scenes of Cornish cliffs. Hand-painted oyster shells marked place settings, while tables were named after New Zealand birds – “twitching was an unexpected hobby we picked up while we were there,” laughs Lucy.

Personal touches continued throughout. A friend’s surfboard became the table plan, Lucy’s handmade flags lined the marquee entrance and Angus’s sister created their cake, adorned with pressed flowers from their parents’ garden.

Undeterred by the rain, Lucy and Angus began their wedding day with a sea dip. A sudden downpour – and even a power cut – just before the ceremony saw guests taking refuge in St Kew Inn before Lucy arrived.

The ceremony was deeply personal. Lucy’s uncle, Bishop Jonathan Frost, led proceedings, while family delivered readings and prayers. Lucy walked down the aisle to Two Strong Hearts by Ainslie Willis, and a choir of family and friends performed – a moment months in the making. “They’d never sung together before, but my stepfather lovingly brought it all together – the harmonies filled the church and brought us to tears,” says Lucy.

The rain paused just in time for a confetti moment before the couple travelled to Port Quin in a VW Beetle. “It was a moment of quiet joy together to reflect on our beautiful ceremony,” says Angus.

Back at Roscarrock, guests gathered for drinks and canapés before speeches and another choir performance. Feast-style dining from Fee's Food proved a highlight of the day, with sea bass, bavette steak, roast cauliflower, seasonal sides and almond tart on the menu. “It felt like a big family meal,” says Lucy.

The couple opened the dance floor to Jump by The Pointer Sisters. “It was really silly,” laughs Lucy, “but the dance floor was full from that point onwards!” Live band Four on the Floor kept celebrations going into the night.

Looking back, it’s the shared moments of music that stand out most. “Standing together in our beautiful marquee, singing at the top of our lungs while the choir performed – the only way to describe that emotion is joy!” says Lucy.

One final moment stays with them. “For the last song, we were lifted onto our friends’ shoulders. Looking out over our loved ones, with the music blaring and the disco ball shining – it was a moment we will never forget.”

Their advice is simple: “Make sure the day reflects you as a couple. Invest in what will bring you joy and create a great party. Involve your friends and family. It will only make you feel more surrounded by love. And don’t worry about the weather – it won’t matter one bit.”
