Celebrate in the Threshing Barn

River Cottage’s restored Threshing Barn blends rustic character with the practical comforts required for a modern wedding.

Exposed beams, natural materials and warm, earthy tones create an inviting setting for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations. The barn can comfortably seat up to 70 guests, with its adjoining deck providing space for another 20 people during the warmer months.

The deck connects the celebrations with the surrounding countryside, allowing guests to step outside for drinks, conversation and views across the farm.

As the evening unfolds, the barn can be transformed for music and dancing, allowing the entire celebration to take place within one adaptable space.

Larger weddings in the countryside

For celebrations of more than 100 guests, River Cottage has space for a marquee, tipi or tent accommodating up to 200 people.

A temporary structure allows couples to design a reception around their own guest numbers and aesthetic while retaining access to the Kitchen Garden, courtyard, yurt and wider farm.

The surrounding countryside remains an integral part of the occasion, whether guests are dining beneath canvas, gathering outside for drinks or watching the sun set over the Axe Valley.

Marquee and tipi weddings incur an additional cost and are tailored to the practical requirements of each celebration.

Food at the heart of the wedding

Food is one of the defining elements of a River Cottage wedding.

Rather than selecting from a rigid selection of standard dishes, couples can work with the chefs to create a menu inspired by their tastes, the season and the produce available from the farm and its network of local suppliers.

The result might be an abundant sharing feast, an elegant multi-course wedding breakfast or relaxed outdoor dining in the courtyard. Canapés, evening food and indulgent puddings can all be woven into the day.

Vegetarian and vegan menus are a natural part of the River Cottage approach, while allergies and other dietary requirements can also be accommodated.

Couples may bring their own wedding cake without an additional charge. The kitchen team can also serve it with fruit and cream as the final course for an extra cost.

Ingredients are selected according to the season, with produce from the Kitchen Garden, orchards and surrounding land appearing across the menu wherever possible. Other ingredients are sourced from producers who share the venue’s commitment to quality and responsible farming.

Biodegradable confetti is welcome, while the flexible spaces allow couples to create a naturally styled celebration that complements the setting rather than competing with it.

Relax in the yurt and courtyard

Alongside the Threshing Barn and Kitchen Garden, couples have use of River Cottage’s rustic yurt and courtyard.

The yurt provides an informal place for guests to gather after the ceremony or step away from the main celebrations. Its relaxed character works particularly well as a lounge area, quiet retreat or additional social space.

During warmer weather, dining can move into the courtyard, where guests can feast together in the open air. Drinks and canapés can also be served outside, allowing the different areas of the farm to flow naturally into one another.

Venue hire includes exclusive use of the Threshing Barn, yurt and Kitchen Garden, as well as the Farmhouse and Gardener’s Cottage for the wedding night.

Stay on the farm

River Cottage offers onsite accommodation for up to ten people across the Farmhouse and neighbouring Gardener’s Cottage.

The restored 17th-century Farmhouse sleeps six, providing a welcoming place for the couple and their closest loved ones to prepare for the day and relax after the celebrations.

Gardener’s Cottage sleeps a further four guests, allowing a small group to remain together at the heart of the farm.

Additional outdoor space may be available for camping or glamping by prior arrangement. This gives couples the opportunity to extend the experience and accommodate more guests within the rural setting.

Planning your River Cottage wedding

A dedicated in-house wedding coordinator works with couples in the lead-up to their celebration and manages the agreed plans on the day.

The coordinator can help couples understand how best to use the venue’s different spaces, build a practical timeline and bring together the ceremony, dining and evening reception.

Couples have the freedom to choose their own suppliers without restrictions. River Cottage can also provide a recommended list of professionals familiar with the farm and its requirements.

Registrar or celebrant fees are not included within the ceremony cost, so couples will need to make their own booking. The wedding team can offer guidance, and early enquiries are recommended for popular dates.

Arrive in true River Cottage style

Part of the charm of River Cottage lies in its secluded valley position.

Guests arrive at the top of the hill before making their way down to the farm, revealing the views and buildings gradually. Depending on the weather and guests’ mobility, transport can be provided for the journey.
