In Winter Light

Paying homage to the stillness and quiet beauty of winter, this styled shoot at The Great Barn captures understated luxury within one of Devon’s most atmospheric rural venues. 
 
Bringing the barn’s verdant surroundings into its clean-lined interiors, the design pairs a warm neutral palette with wild foliage and intricate detailing for a look that feels modern, minimalist and deeply rooted in the season. As Ella Vooght of The Great Barn explains, the concept celebrates “the venue’s soft 15th-century tones, bare branches and evergreens with elegant, classic styling contrasted by abundant green-and-white florals.”
 
It is the flowers that set the tone. Large vases overflow with untamed blooms, while bottles of single stems quietly punctuate the space – enhancing the backdrop while allowing the bouquet, a garden-style clutch of seasonal florals, to take focus. Along the trestle tables, textured foliage spliced with white and cream petals and pinecones spills between pillar candles and refined silver-and-white place settings. At either end, floor lanterns, moss-covered candelabras and tall glass cylinders cast a soft glow, reinforcing the outdoors-in narrative. 
 
The stationery suite echoes the palette with botanical illustrations in teal, pine needle and forest green. Then there is the cake: a suspended four-tiered confection adorned with pearls and flowers, catching the light and reflecting the brides’ moonstone and pearl jewellery with quiet luminosity. 
 
Fashion introduces a whimsical edge. From a softly pleated gown with a sculpted basque waist and delicate straps to a lace topper with fluted sleeves layered over a slinky satin slip, each look balances romance with modernity. Bespoke veiling adds drama and individuality – scalloped floral lace, airy tulle embroidered with deep red roses and a pearl-encrusted cowl-back cape create a showstopping finish. As Ella notes, “Sleeved gowns, intricate veils and handcrafted pearl and moonstone jewellery sat alongside refined tablescapes and a pearl-adorned cake” – a collective vision brought to life by a talented team of Devon-based creatives. 
 
The result is a celebration not only of The Great Barn in its winter finery, but of the exceptional bridal artistry found across the South West.
