A modern rustic romance at Battleford Farm for nature-loving couples

Tucked deep in the Devon countryside, where rolling hills melt into wooded valleys on the edge of Totnes, Battleford Farm offers an authentic rural backdrop for a wedding steeped in natural beauty and character. With its rustic barn, sweeping fields and acres of space to roam, the venue is a flexible, DIY-friendly canvas that nature-loving couples can transform into a celebration bursting with free-spirited romance.

This styled shoot celebrates that charm, sparked by owner Miriam Hawkings’ discovery that Battleford Farm was once a Domesday Manor. “I wanted to showcase this ever-loved spot near Totnes, with its layers of splendour and agricultural history,” she explains. “I was inspired to show how the venue can be transformed, so the talented team of creatives styled the space with elegance and subtle nods to its farming past.”

Earthy terracotta tones and refined countryside touches strike a balance between rustic and sophisticated. “My aim was to present the venue as a blank canvas while keeping those genuine farm details in a ‘gentleman farmer’ way,” says Miriam. Animals, heritage textures and centuries-old elements sit beautifully alongside the considered styling of the wedding barn.

Haybales, barrels and vintage stoneware set the scene, while flowers in burnt orange, warm red and mocha brown spill from urns and jars, softened with foliage and dried stems. Layered rugs and cosy textiles add snug warmth to the space, enhancing the relaxed, rural feel.

The tablescape continues the aesthetic – bare wooden tabletops dressed with delicate lace, flickering candles in gold holders and peachy-orange blooms arranged in jugs and dainty glass jars. Sage-toned stoneware plates are topped with oatmeal linens and a sprig of foliage, blending rustic simplicity with romantic refinement. Subtle accents bring the farm setting to life, from shepherd’s crooks to weathered textures that nod to the land’s working heritage.

The groom channels countryside elegance in a sage green tweed jacket and dried boutonnière, perfectly complementing the palette, while the bride embodies relaxed romance in a gown featuring a lace bodice and soft tulle skirt – easy to dance in and dreamy for wandering hand-in-hand through the fields.

It is a celebration of rural authenticity elevated with style – where history, landscape and love of the land meet modern countryside chic.
