Amongst the Wildflowers

Katie and Matt's al fresco and eclectic wedding at Anran

Katie and Matt first met at Leeds University during a night out with their respective hockey teams. Years later, they were enjoying a trip to Canada when Matt surprised Katie by popping the question.

"Matt persuaded his close friends to pretend that they had bought him a scenic flight for two as a surprise 30th birthday present for him," reveals Katie. "We flew to the north of Vancouver Island over stunning scenery to a remote lake, where Matt got down on one knee."

Selecting Anran as the venue for their wildflower-inspired wedding, the day took a beautiful country chic look featuring shades of lavender and green. "A little bit rustic-charm-meets-A-Midsummer Night's-Dream," describes Katie.

Her bridal look perfectly complemented the scene, a bohemian empire line gown featuring lace and a beautiful open back. Meanwhile, the groom and his groomsmen caused their own sartorial stir by donning dapper blue tweed lounge suits with Liberty print pastel wildflower ties.

In keeping with the wild aesthetic, the ceremony was staged outside, which formed one of the couple's most poignant memories from the day. Poems, words and songs chosen by Katie and Matt as well as family and friends ensured a personal and incredibly poignant experience.

"Our outdoor ceremony in the bright sunshine amidst the gorgeous Devon landscape was a very special moment," says Katie. "The glasshouse was a beautiful and special space in which to have the breakfast: full of light and plants. We also liked the secret parts of the venue, which made it an interesting social space and were proud of all the handmade touches that gave it a personal feel."

Reception drinks and canapes were served in the courtyard before a sit-down wedding breakfast comprising burrata with heritage tomatoes, slow roast lamb with a delicious range of side dishes and mini chocolate cheesecakes and lemon possets.

An evening of dancing to the upbeat soundtrack provided by the brilliant Blue Lion Band was finished by sparklers and carriages at midnight, leaving the newly-weds to reflect upon their day and select an important piece of advice to pass on to other couples.

"Don't let the admin get on top of you," says Katie. "Remember, it's about having fun, and take time to reflect together on the day as it's happening."
