When Vickie and Jack first met on Valentine’s Day 2018, sparks flew – quite literally – at a traffic light party in a Coventry nightclub. “Most people played it safe in orange, trying not to seem too keen, but not us,” laughs Jack. “Vickie boldly chatted me up and we spent most of the night helping others find their match, swapping glow sticks from orange to red, acting like a pair of mischievous cupids.”
Every year since, the couple has escaped to Cornwall for a surfing holiday – so when Jack proposed during their 2023 trip, it was only fitting that the moment unfolded on a Cornish clifftop. After a beachside barbecue at Porthcurno, he suggested a hike up to the Minack Theatre to take in the view. Halfway up the path, Jack “half-knelt, half-hovered” on the rocky ground and popped the question – and of course, she said yes.
There was never any doubt about where they’d marry. “Cornwall is our happy place,” says Vickie. “It’s where so many of our favourite memories have been made.” When they discovered they could wed right on the sand, close to their beloved Fistral Beach surf spot, they didn’t even view another venue. Lusty Glaze was the one.
The pair envisioned their day as a giant, joy-filled party – bold, bright and colourful, surrounded by all their favourite people. “We leaned into playful, retro touches – disco balls, vibrant florals and pops of pink, orange and coral to create a fun, high-energy atmosphere that felt so us,” explains Vickie. "The whole vibe was more 'good time with great people' than a perfectly coordinated theme."
Both Vickie and Jack share a love of crafting and DIY, so handmade nearly everything for their day - from the beach games and decorations to the cocktails. As a graphic designer, Vickie designed and created all the stationery herself, while the couple teamed up at a screen-printing workshop to make fun posters for a wedding gallery wall. “It made the day feel extra personal and full of love,” says Jack.
Their reception was a riot of colour – with cascading flowers flowing from the sweetheart tables and mismatched vases brimming with bright stems and hanging installations dotted with disco balls, creating a vibrant, sun-soaked dreamscape right on the edge of the beach.
Their ceremony, held on the sands on the hottest day of the year, was emotional, scenic and full of joy. “We both cried a lot!” says Vickie. “We included a ring-warming – our wedding bands once belonged to my grandparents, so it felt really special to have my parents bless them before we exchanged vows.” The pair walked up the aisle to laughter and cheers, ready to kick off the celebrations.
After cocktails and beach games, everyone gathered at the colourful tables for a relaxed barbecue feast. One of their earliest dates was a Fatboy Slim gig, where they fell in love with the warm-up DJ, X-Ray Ted – who ended up playing at their wedding.
The evening opened with a DJ set from Jack’s stepdad, Dan, including their first dance to You Be Love by Avicii. “Everyone was barefoot dancing in the sand,” says Vickie. And, in true party spirit, her bridesman surprised everyone with a hilariously cheeky, confetti-filled performance that guests are still talking about.
Their advice for other couples? “Enjoy every second,” says Vickie. “It all goes by so fast. One moment you’re buried in Pinterest boards and crafting, and the next you’re back to boring weekends with nothing to do but reminisce. Just soak it all up.”
