A beautifully bespoke elopement at Lower Barns

A beautifully bespoke elopement at Lower Barns

Article Published: Thursday 30th August, 2018 - 3:29pm

Lower Barns, an elopement venue in a super-scenic corner of Cornwall, is a brilliantly characterful setting for those dreaming of an intimate wedding without losing that special feeling. A bespoke and beautiful gay-friendly venue that offers elopements with up to 20 guests, Sarah and Sophie recently got married there, and could not fault the entire experience from start to finish.

The couple spent the morning having their hair and make-up done by Hair by Emma C and Suzi Winter, while Juliet Gould at Cornish Farm Flowers organised their stunning flowers. With the sun shining, Sarah and Sophie said their vows in The Wed Shack, before enjoying the gardens with their friends, then nipping off to Vault Beach for photographs. Following a delicious wedding feast of Cornish lamb shanks and stuffed chicken with pesto, mozzarella and toasted pine nuts, followed by lemon and blackberry posset and sticky toffee pudding, the couple had a divine naked cake from The Kookie Cakery before partying the night away!

The happy couple were so blown away by their elopement, we wanted to share it with you, to give other couples an insight into how special a Lower Barns wedding can be. In Sophie's own words...

"Lower Barns is so much more than just a wedding venue to us. It's a place like nothing I've seen anywhere before, and as soon as we saw it we both knew it was everything we wanted our special day to be," says Sophie.

"Much to my shock and surprise, we got engaged on 2nd December last year at Mentmore Falconry in Long Marston when Flynn the barn owl delivered the most beautiful engagement ring. It was the most fantastic day, having our close friends with us, meeting all the birds and of course Flynn flying to me with the ring.

"She also surprised me with a night in a five-star luxury hotel, which as it turned out, wasn't at all welcoming to same-sex couples and made us feel very uncomfortable. So we started searching for a gay-friendly venue - the place we wanted to get married had to be accepting and make us feel welcome. A few weeks passed, and we had decided Hawaii was the place, then by chance we came across the Lower Barns site.

"Everything just went so smoothly - the booking, what we wanted on the day, the accommodation for all our friends, it was all just so easy! When we went to take a look, we both knew it was just meant to be. It felt like we were visiting family - everyone was welcome, including our dog, Daisy.

"I'd describe Lower Barns as bursting with colour even on the most dreary of British days. Our Venezuelan friends were delighted and said that it was 'just like home'. Janie and Mike have made the place their life's work and it really does show.

"They've thought of everything - it's dog-friendly, it caters for disabled clients and even includes a separate suite that has an upstairs for carers if needed. Nothing was too much trouble on the day, it was really just like our home from home. Looking back, there's nothing that I would change. I'm sure we'll be back to relive a day that I never wanted to end."

Janie and Mike of Lower Barns were absolutely thrilled to receive such glowing feedback. "We just love the smiles and laughter that make memories to last forever," says Janie. "If you're looking for a gay-friendly wedding, we would love to have a chat - or pop down and take a peep at Lower Barns.
