Wedding styling: Victorian romance

Take beautiful avant garde styling at a Devon country venue for a romantic wedding scene complete with a sense of Victoriana glamour...

"We took the inspiration for this shoot from the beautiful Highbullen Hotel, North Devon. It has the romanticism and elegance of the Victorian era," says Photographer Laura Farmer from Freeformimages. Located in rural mid-Devon and set in 127 acres of land, Highbullen Hotel is nestled between Exmoor and Dartmoor, presenting a truly magnificent Victorian country manor house renowned for luxury, comfort and fine food. Behind the impressive Victorian facade is a fine example of the architecture that emerged from the 'Arts and Crafts' movement, where solid, well-proportioned forms, steep roofs and deep porches sit alongside intriguing marble fireplaces.

The dress, Aurelia from Casablanca Bridal boasts a long-sleeved Mandarin collar jacket atop a gorgeous A-line gown comprising silk satin organza and lace appliques. The 'Victorian with a modern twist' brief was finished with the make-up: a stunning mixture of lilacs and dark purples on the eyes with red lips, while drop earrings and headpieces adorned with Swarovski crystals and pearls ensured iconic, vintage glamour.

The styling served to perfectly complement the theme, with muted grey and green candles alongside mosses and fruits with hints of pearls and silver, and a statement cake inspired by the house's period features: "The sugar flowers are all varieties that could have been in a Victorian bouquet, but with a nod to the 21st century," says Laura.

"For the table set, grey lace overlays were paired with modern lilac lace hoods adorned with vintage style modern brooches, which provided an elegant, stylish base. The use of pearls and tea lighting in sequin and crackled mirror glass was perfect for the theme and complemented the beautiful floral centrepiece. Lace base, candelabras, sequin tea lights, silver LOVE letter and candles all provide depth of lightened shade at various heights and intensity. What more could be more romantic?" she elaborates.

From the floristry to the stationery, the soft palette of lilac, pink and lavender carried the romantic look and feel of this inspired modern-day-meets-vintage-glamour shoot.
