Wedding styling: American carnival

"A combination of pretty, weird and wonderful," was the brief that Hazel and Jenny, who styled the shoot, gave themselves - and the verdant grounds and sumptuous interiors of the Penventon Park Hotel sets the scene for an eclectic and character-filled shoot that screams styled eccentricity, blending the grandeur of a 1920s' American carnival with a dash of modern glamour.

From a fortune teller's tent to vintage lampshades and a fairy-lit tipi, the quirky props infuse fun and a rich sense of personality, perfect for a carnival theme. In terms of colours, intense teal blues, poppy reds and gold are used to create a bold, bright and daring look for the tablescapes.

"I used velvet red Naomi roses to complement the velvet wedding dress and to give a rich look against the gold vases on the tables, along with red skimmia and berries to give texture and a natural feel," says Lin of Sweet Pea Floral Studio, who added bright red carnations and gerberas for a bright pop of colour to lift the darker reds.

Stationery from Anon Design Studio helps set the tone, using geometrics as a nod to old-style fairground signage style, incorporating bright diamond patterns and strong lines. Place settings continue the theme, with spray-painted toy animals atop deep blue runner cloths, alongside gold vases and candlesticks. Gold chargers frame the vintage plates, which creates a bold contrast in style and added layering to the table, while, standing pride of place on an ornate vintage drinks trolley, is the carnival-inspired cake.

Packed with fun and amusement, blended with glamour and style, this shoot takes carnival from fancy dress to fancy-free and fabulous.
