Talwyn and Gaz's butterfly-strewn day at The Queen's Hotel

A series of sporting scenarios saw love blossom between Talwyn and Gaz, who first met at a Thai boxing class in Penzance. "I wouldn't say it was love at first sight - he used to really annoy me," recalls Talwyn. "However, I was also fascinated by him. We bumped into each other on a night out and the rest is history."

The proposal took her completely by surprise. She was marshalling for a triathlon and standing on the finishing line awarding the medals. "Gaz took part in the triathlon and when he finished he tried to get down on one knee. Unfortunately, due to cramp in his leg he only managed to crouch, but he asked me to marry him!" she recalls.

Pinterest enthusiast Talwyn set about designing their day, choosing a fuchsia pink and silver/grey colour scheme for the dazzling array of DIY details. "I love butterflies so I made my bouquet with artificial flowers and butterflies and bound it together with silk ribbon," she says. The homemade fairy wands carried by the flower girls echoed the butterfly theme, while their fuchsia pink tutu dresses - also made lovingly by Talwyn - were adorned with flowers.

Talwyn wore a floaty gown with a sparkling chest detail and low back. Her nephew's pageboy outfit, however, ended up being modified on the day. "He refused to wear his grey three-piece suit and pink tie because he wanted to wear his Batman outfit. He ended up wearing part of each!" she explains.

The sense of character continued in a number of ways. "My dad is a Methodist minister at The Centre in Newlyn and I didn't want anyone else marrying Gaz and I," explains Talwyn. Hence, her dad walked her partway down the aisle and handed her to her uncle so he could stand at the front of the church to lead the ceremony. "The service was full of laughter and tears but it was a very happy occasion," she says.

Adding to the day's personal dimension, Gaz's retained fireman role was honoured when the local fire engine pulled up for a photo shoot session - much to the glee of lifelong fire engine fan, Talwyn.

Flanked by sea views along Penzance's promenade, the newly-weds enjoyed an intimate family meal at The Queens Hotel. They then hosted an evening party, complete with a disco and photo booth.

"Savour every minute of your wedding day - it goes so fast," affirms Talwyn. "When you set a date, you find that people have expectations of what you should do, who to invite and so on. Your day should be about you and your future wife or husband. Be strong and plan your day for you and no one else." She also recommends a DIY approach: "I made a lot of things that helped keep the cost down."
