December Delights

From a Christmas morning proposal in 2013 to a Christmas wedding in 2014, the magic of the festive season inspired Kerra and Tom's winter celebration

From a Christmas morning proposal in 2013 to a Christmas wedding in 2014, the magic of the festive season inspired Kerra and Tom's winter celebration.

"We wanted a frosty 'Christmas feel' rather than the traditional reds and greens," explains Kerra. "We went searching for inspiration in 'Buttons and Bows' in Penzance, and came out with two shades of teal and blue ribbon - these ribbons then featured heavily in many aspects of the wedding."

DIY details were also a recurrent feature; Kerra and Tom busied themselves making everything from the invitations, seating plan and orders of service to the tea light holders and church decorations. They put together the wedding favours - miniature bottles of Christmas tree seeds for the adults and presents underneath the Christmas tree for the children - and Kerra even made the wedding cake: a sleek, tiered creation decorated with snowflakes.

"Making decorations and other elements yourselves cut downs the cost dramatically," advises Kerra. "It also allowed us to put more of a personal spin on our wedding and to get our families involved in the preparations too."

The seasonal decor twinkled in the candlelight in Gulval Church, where Christmas carols and a performance from Twin Harmony enhanced the festive mood of the ceremony. In keeping with the snug, wintery mood, Kerra accessorised her ivory gown with a fur wrap and a lace headpiece by Holly Young, while Tom and his groomsmen teamed their dapper morning suits with teal cravats and pocket squares.

Punctuated with pops of teal, a shimmering aesthetic carried through the celebration space at Land's End Hotel; against the backdrop of the steely Atlantic, the carnival of candles and fairy lights, foliage and snowflake details made for an enchanting scene. Guests tucked into warming mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies before a wedding breakfast of vegetable soup, topside of beef and profiteroles.

Barbed Choir provided the post-dinner soundtrack before Slap Dash Trio took to the stage for the evening shenanigans, filling the floor with their eclectic, crowd-pleasing set.

Reflecting on their day, Kerra and Tom have no regrets about choosing to marry in December. "Having an 'out of season' wedding in Cornwall was amazing. We would highly recommend it!" enthuses Kerra.

She also advocates taking a relaxed approach on the day. "Don't fret about the finer details. You are the only ones who know what it should have been like in the first place - so no one will notice if things don't go according to plan."
