Picture Perfect

Your wedding photos should be a stunning and soul-stirring record of your day – so choose your photographer carefully. Let these inspiring image-makers kick off the quest…

Once the dress has been stowed away, the left over cake polished off and the thank you cards penned and sent, what remains? Yes, there's your status as freshly wed, your entire future together, a pile of gifts and keepsakes, not to mention memories. But what happens when you want to recall those precious moments and return to the day of 'I dos'? The most poignant and long lasting mementos of your wedding day lies in something often overlooked or left until last minute: the photography.

Wedding Photography Devon

They say a picture tells a thousand words. But what about your love story? Your wedding photographs are not just a visual representation of the event; they evoke a flurry of senses, emotions, people and experiences. Capturing the details of the day you'll undoubtedly miss due to the whirlwind nature of it all, they will serve as a lasting memorial of your love, your youth and your relationship.

Future generations will want to marvel at your matrimonial images, so accurately capturing the essence is important in creating a timeless record of your day. Relatives may snap a few impressive shots, but the only way for guaranteed and consistent results is to go professional.

Whilst looking for a photographer, many people become preoccupied by price. You may be spending more on your photographer than your dress, but considering what you receive for your money will help you to wisely budget for one of the singularly most important aspects of the wedding.

It’s not just a day’s work. Not only are you purchasing a polished set of pictures, but a (or several) professional's experience, qualifications, technical expertise, travel, creative talent and photographic equipment, which requires continual updating.

Then there’s the element of time, which often involves a series of consultations, a location scout, the entire event itself, pre and post-wedding shoots and a protracted period of post-wedding production – including retouching, formatting, printing and album making.

Too much to tackle? Fret not. We have profiled a fabulous range of wedding photographers to help you with that all-important decision…

HARRERA IMAGES

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “I‘ve been working in press and fashion for over ten years and have the experience to let the wedding flow without interruption, making whatever happens on the day look great in an art based documentary style, peppered with slashes of fashion. Spending a day visiting the venue, dry walking through the wedding with all my couples really helps as well so no time is wasted on the day and every moment is taken advantage of.”

Packages available: “Every couple receives a disc of full resolution images of their day. For the couple who want something a bit different, I will punctuate the day with black and white film. This gives them the opportunity to have some original analogue art pieces. Every part of the film process is a completely 'one off' original, hand produced and unique.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Look through websites and find a style you like and then visit the photographer face to face and have a chat. I would advise looking through a complete wedding as opposed to a portfolio that has been gathered over a few years of one-off pictures. It is the best way to see an accurate representation of what you could expect from your own wedding pictures.”

ANDREW HAWKER

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “I am fortunate enough to enjoy a career I love, threading together the little moments that reveal the complex relationships, emotions and experiences of your wedding day. It’s a pleasure to satisfy my customers beyond their expectations, as I deliver those unique images individual to you.”

Packages available: “Offering coverage from £1200, Andrew Hawker Photography provides two photographers and all your images on a licensed disc. These images are all finished to a high standard and provided in colour and black and white. Airbrushing and spot/seagull/people removal are also included to ensure that your photographs are as perfect as possible.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Always try and see a big selection of photographs and, if possible, a complete wedding. Ask them what contingency plans are in place should the photographer be unable to attend for any reason. It is important that you find someone who you get on with. They need to be able to get on with your wedding party in order to capture people as naturally as possible and to fit in with the celebrations. The best weddings for me are the ones where people feel that I am more like a guest than staff as I weave in and out, capturing images without people being aware or working with people to bring out the best in them.”

PHOTOMAGIC

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “Delivering photographic excellence from start to finish, we capture your magical day the way you want it, with vibrancy and passion. Working discretely, we capture timeless, natural expressions and special moments that will speak volumes for generations to come.”

Packages available: “Photomagic offers five unique packages, Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Spirit, ranging from £750 to just over £2000, with most people spending £1200-£1500. We also offer tailor-made packages, so that we build the package around your specific budget, so that everything that you desire can be affordable. We aim to be competitive, are pleased to negotiate, and consider that we offer great value for money.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Look at some past albums produced by the photographer. Look at the website and get a feel for the photographer’s 'flair' and style. Read the testimonials. Meet the photographer and see how well you get on. Do they listen to what you want, or do they try and tell you what they want you to hear?”

SORCHA HOLLOWAY

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: "Sorcha Holloway Photography consider their wedding photography to be contemporary, with a little twist of tradition, to tell the story of the day while also providing beautiful creative images to treasure. We strive to provide a very personal but unobtrusive service, dedication to each individual wedding, with great attention to detail.”

Packages available: “An all day service with both Sorcha and Tim (we never sub-contract) from the preparations up until the first dance. Luxury Jorgensen albums, top-of-the-range British-made digital albums and coffee table books, DVD with all edited images. Pre-wedding shoot as standard.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “The day will come and go, the photographs will become the memories. Therefore, make sure you book a photographer whose style you most admire and who provides quality products that will become family heirlooms. It is also very important that you like your photographers. They will be around all day so personality clashes are best avoided!"

ANDREW COULTER

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “Over and above everything else, I just want to make sure that you have fun. The more we get on and have a laugh, the better your photos will be. I love shooting into the light, which makes your hair and skin glow, and the photos have a lovely bright feel to them. I love shooting photos of your emotions, and you get a real feel for the day. Getting it right first time is really important to me.”

Packages available: “I've got three different packages on offer, two of which could best be described as Pure Indulgence. These are perfect for couples who want the ultimate bespoke service, one of the finest wedding albums in the world, with the option to make their own unlimited prints, and the personal attention and photography of Andrew Coulter. The 3rd package is perfect for couples who want gorgeous wedding photography, with the option to make their own unlimited albums and prints. All my packages can be individually tailored to your requirements, and are totally flexible.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “To me the only way to get truly fantastic wedding photographs is to make sure that you get on really well with your photographer. Photographic technique is one thing, but having a great relationship with the people you are photographing is another altogether. Also, make sure that you check out what you actually get on your day, rather than just choose from a portfolio of the photographers’ favourite images. I don't put passwords on the clients' section of my website, as I find it really important that you can see what people actually get in full at the end of the day.”

KENSA PHOTOGRAPHY

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: "I have a relaxed and informal approach to my photography. I tend to blend in amongst the guests, which helps them to relax and allows me to get the most intimate and informal shots, capturing the emotions and feelings of the day."

Packages available: "I not only provide a record of the day, presented in either an album or a storybook, my boudoir photography is getting increasingly popular in the period leading up to the wedding. I also offer rash the Dress sessions, which are a lot of fun and allow more time to be creative and shoot in different locations. The end results are spectacular - and we typically do not actually trash the dress."

Advice on choosing a photographer: Make sure you like their work, check out their website and style. Then ideally you need to meet them in person, as it's imperative that you like them. Also, make sure that they have adequate backup equipment and insurance. Can you imagine if their camera or flash went wrong during your wedding and they had no spare?"

SARAH LAUREN

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “Photography is my passion and coupled with my love of weddings, I feel incredibly lucky to call this ‘work’. My style is what can be loosely termed reportage photography or documentary style, meaning that I tell the story of your day with pictures. I do take some more traditional family shots, but quickly and subtly. This ensures that the day runs smoothly and that all the guests enjoy participating in the photos. And as a creative photographer I can concentrate much more on you as individuals to create a truly unique memory of the day.”

Packages available: “Couples appreciate my flexible package structure as I cater for all budgets and needs. I offer the packages as a guide, but am equally happy to create a tailor-made package for those who have specific requests or desires. All packages include two consultations prior to your wedding (including a pre-wedding photo shoot), photographic coverage of bridal preparations, and a DVD slideshow of your images to music.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Although price is clearly important, there are several other factors to bear in mind. Never underestimate how vital it is to build a relationship with your photographer – do they make you feel relaxed; are they easy to talk to; do they respond to your questions promptly? Also, although you want a photographer who is happy to accommodate your needs, it’s equally crucial that they can advise you confidently, based on their expertise. Finally – what style of photography do you like? These will be your memories so choosing someone who can capture the energy and personality of your day is the key.

REBECCA ROUNDHILL

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “My style is predominantly candid/reportage to capture the spontaneous moments as they unfold and all the wonderful emotions of the day. I also like to include photos with the bride and groom that are slightly more considered, looking at their chosen venue/s and seeking out beautiful vantage points for capturing some natural portraits of them together, keeping the mood very relaxed and personal. I am sensitive to what is happening around me, knowing when to step back and observe and equally being able to organise where appropriate. I always act with a respectful, friendly manner as you want to get the best from everyone at the wedding.”

Packages available: “I have ideas for packages in my pricelist but I like to keep flexible, preferring to offer a more bespoke service and allowing couples to come back for additional products after the wedding should they wish. I also offer an album that is completely unique to the couple, designed by a graphic designer with space to include any personal mementoes such as vows, speeches and menu amongst the photos.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “I think it is as important to feel comfortable with your photographer as it is to like their photography. It is such an important day that you want someone who is warm and respectful around you and your guests. Someone who can really tune into the emotions of the day and bring out the best in you, especially if you are shy in front of the camera.”

LUCY SHERGOLD

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “I offer relaxed and natural wedding photography, whilst still making room for a lovely selection of your classic group and couple shots. I aim to be subtle and calm throughout the day, without missing any important moments and emotions. I love to be creative and take images that have an individual feel. I spend a lot of time researching different styles and images so I always have fresh ideas. Coming from an art and picture research background, I know what makes a good photograph, and have a great understanding of light, colour and composition.”

Packages available: “I offer a range of different packages, all of which include all the images from your wedding in high resolution on a disc, along with a selection of beautiful and individual albums to suit different tastes and budgets.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “You need to find someone that you feel comfortable and relaxed with. A photographer who understands how you want your wedding day to be, and the type of photographs you are looking for. Your photographer should feel like a friend at your wedding, that way you will have a collection of lovely relaxed images that truly reflect your personalities and the essence of your wedding day.”

JANINE HALL

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “We are inspired by our clients and their stories. We strive to create beautiful iconic images - always mindful of remaining unobtrusive during ceremonial elements whilst being highly efficient and creative and, in particular, keeping it fun and relaxed during any family or group photos.”

Packages available: “Our artistic influences provide some of the most unusual and engaging wall images by combining printing with hand finishing techniques. The company is renowned for conceiving wedding album designs that incorporate 3-D elements e.g. they have used sand from the beach in one couple's album and the confetti from the day as well as including the actual invitation and place cards which the couple have made or designed themselves...beautifully archiving treasured elements of the day.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Find a photographer who you like and whose work you absolutely love (nothing else will do). Your photographer should be someone who makes you feel happy and relaxed, so that you and your guests will enjoy the photography during the day, if you are happy...the pictures should be great.”
01752 841741 www.janinehallphotography.com

RICKIE STAPLE

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “I like to believe that I offer a calm, relaxed and professional photographic service. My creative style is definitely feminine; I very much enjoy making ladies look beautiful and surprising them with what I capture. I think the best feedback I have received was the comment 'leve, simples e suave coisa' which as I understand it translates as 'light, simple and gentle thing' - which I think sums up my ethos exactly.”

Packages available: “I offer either a full day or half day's photography service, both include the cost of full editing and post-production and you are supplied with a beautiful hard-backed printed wedding album photo book alongside your images. You are able to view and purchase your shots from a private online gallery. Every wedding day is completely unique – I am open to any creative ideas or special requirements you may have.”

Advice for choosing a photographer: “I would definitely advise that you meet with your photographer prior to making a booking. In addition to that a meeting will also ensure that you like your photographer, and that they have a good understanding of who you are, your personal style and what you would like to capture. Walk through your venue/s together and discuss different photographic locations, you'll then be prepared for all weather options too.”
07970 846851 www.rickiestaple.com

KIRSTIN PRISK

Wedding Photography Devon

Ethos and style: “My ethos is to deliver the kind of service and results I'd expect from my wedding photographer. I believe in going with the flow, relying on instinct, and letting the process remain as organic as possible. I also feel that, as a professional, my results should not only capture the couple’s connection and the day’s atmosphere, but do this with a creative and athletically refined edge. A high percentage of my wedding clients are wedding photographers, designers, illustrators and editors."

Packages available: Packages start from £1800 and can include Queensbury Albums or Couture Books. All packages come with a disc and web gallery."

Advice for choosing a photographer: “Compare websites and arrange meetings with your favourites. Ask to see their last ten weddings - all the photos, not a selection. Try and choose with someone who has personal vision and doesn't just production line the same poses at each wedding. This is about your love for each other and capturing that.”
