Ali and Ben met through mutual friends 15 years ago whilst on holiday in Cornwall. “Portscatho is a special place to us as my grandmother lived in the village for many years and we visited for holidays,” says Ali. “Since Ben and I have been dating we’ve been coming to the village together.” Very fittingly, Ben proposed on the breakwater in Portscatho on a sun-filled December’s day with Ali’s grandmother’s ring. “It was just perfect,” comments Ali. “We chose Portscatho as we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else”. ali + ben /// highlights from Memories On Film on Vimeo.
The ceremony at Gerrans Church concluded with a performance from Ben’s usher, Tom, who played guitar and sang some of the couple’s favourite songs. “It was magical,” reflects Ali.
The reception was held in a marquee from Coast2Coast Marquees in a family friend’s field overlooking the coast. Ali and Ben decided against a theme, instead choosing simple, elegant décor with white, pink, blue and lilac flowers. “We made the table plan, place settings and bunting ourselves to add our own touch to the stunning marquee.”

Guests enjoyed canapés and champagne to the sound of ‘The Duck Egg Soup Band’ while the newlyweds enjoyed a photo shoot at the beautiful beachside setting of their proposal.

The wedding breakfast was a lavish affair comprising fresh and smoked salmon terrine with chive cream and Melba toast for starters followed by Cornish sirloin of beef with mini Yorkshire puddings. Rich chocolate wedding torte and Cornish cheeses completed the feast.

After the meal, Ali and Ben took to the floor for their first dance to ‘Come What May’ from ‘Moulin Rouge’. DJ Livewire then took the helm, keeping the dance floor grooving with a play list personally selected by the pair.

The evening still had a surprise in store for Ali and Ben: “My brother arranged some beautiful paper floating lanterns to be laid outside the marquee. Guests were asked to tie their place cards with a message to us onto the lanterns and then they were lit and launched into the sky towards the coast – beautiful!” Ali recalls.

After their “magical” day, the couple met their guests for pasties in the Harbour Club the next day before departing for a dream honeymoon in Zanzibar.

“Plan as much as possible ahead of time and keep all the parties informed of the timings and contacts,” Ali advises. “This meant we could relax on the day, knowing that everyone knew what was meant to happen and when.”
