Wedding Catering - Seasonal Produce
A Taste of Devon

Aside from the breathtaking scenery, magnificent venues and picture postcard churches, there’s a further – and rather compelling – reason to tie the knot in Devon: the food.

Whether it’s fresh fish and shellfish landed on the harbourside of a quaint fishing village, meat reared on the lush slopes of the countryside, cheeses churned in a local creamery or vegetables nourished in Devon’s soil – the county boasts a veritable bounty of flavoursome produce. And, as couples increasingly seek to stamp their wedding with a local and individual flavour, a menu full of Devon produce is, quite simply, a must.

Utilising the finest local produce is at the heart of Antonia’s Kitchen’s ethos. The Exeter-based catering company works with farmers, fishermen and local producers, going directly to the source wherever possible. Indeed, on the morning of our photo shoot for this feature, owner Antonia Makeig-Jones arrived with a basket full to the brim with herbs, courgettes and plums just picked from her kitchen garden. It is this dedication to fresh-as-it-comes food and quality ingredients that makes the company’s food so exquisite and full of delectable flavour.

“We do find that our clients are increasingly conscious of where produce is coming from and the sustainability of foods,” comments Antonia. “We pride ourselves on sourcing local produce and enjoy using the very best that Devon has to offer.”

A small and passionate number make up Antonia’s Kitchen. Antonia, who is a passionate and highly skilled cook, works alongside executive chef Beatus Elsholtz. Having spent 12 years working for Links Clubhouse in St Andrews, Scotland where he oversaw the catering for two British Open Championships amongst other prestigious events, Beatus boasts an accomplished background. A flexible chef who cooks and adapts classical and modern recipes, Beatus prides himself on his perfectionist approach to presentation and, most importantly, his passion for flavour. He works alongside an enthusiastic and professional team of cooks and waiting staff.

The company caters for weddings of all sizes across the county. From tea parties and buffets to hog roasts and barbecues piled with fish and steaks, a range of relaxed dining options is available. Served in their pretty vintage china, the tea parties are particularly popular with couples planning a chic vintage-inspired celebration.

Those seeking something more structured than a buffet but less formal than fine dining might opt for ‘bowl food’: a range of miniature dishes for guests to graze upon, whether it’s comfort foods such as sausage and mash or light desserts such as fruit trifle. A fabulous way of treating your guests to a series of diverse dishes, bowl food also comprises a practical option for indecisive couples who are struggling to cut down their shortlist of dishes. A further novel idea is to serve sharing platters rather than a starter – a sociable form of dining that offers guests a show-stopping selection of flavours.

Then, of course, there’s the fine dining option. Whether it’s tender scallops drizzled with zesty flavour, South Devon beef laced with sumptuous sauce or decadent desserts lavished with chocolate and cream – the team creates divine menus for a sophisticated sit-down dinner.

With a bespoke approach being a central element of the modern wedding, the menus are tailored to the tastes or wedding theme of each couple for a highly personalised dining experience. And as part of their comprehensive service, the team will dress the tables to complement the theme or style of dining, putting their creative flair and eye for detail – not to mention their extensive collection of tableware and bone china tea sets – to stunning use.

Antonia and Beatus have devised a series of ideas, from moreish canapés to sharing platters (which make for a delicious alternative to a starter), to inspire a very modern and decidedly Devon-themed menu.
