Darling Buds

Jack and Sophie's handmade wedding at Wooda Holiday Park

On her arrival, he treated her to a romantic picnic - and proceeded to pop the question.

Another place full of cherished childhood memories for Sophie - Warbstow Church - was the setting for their ceremony, while Wooda Holiday Park provided the perfect blank canvas for their reception.

"Jack's a carpenter and I'm a florist so everything was either flowery or wood!" explains Sophie, who opted for a palette of grey, peach, pink and purple. "Jack had recently chopped down an old oak tree that had lots of lovely lichen on it and I used this as a base throughout the whole wedding." Sophie and her boss created a beautiful lichen-covered arch at the entrance of the church, while the stunning flowers added a vibrant splash of colour everywhere, from the church altar to the toilets! The couple's handiwork extended to the multitude of hanging decorations and the blackboards framed by old wood from Jack's farm.

Fittingly, Sophie accessorised her lace gown with a gorgeous medley of flowers in her hair and a striking bouquet.

The ceremony was infused with poignant moments and, in homage to their Young Farmers' Club membership, the newly-weds exited in equally as idiosyncratic style. "We came out with forks and a tug of war rope!" exclaims Sophie.

The transport was another nostalgic and sentimental feature of the day, as the pair hired the exact same vehicle that Sophie's parents used on their wedding day 25 years ago: a white Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Guests were greeted at the reception with canapes such as mini fish and chips and steak on a stick washed down with Corona and lime, and Prosecco and elderflower. A feast of pork belly with dauphinoise potatoes and a trio of classic desserts followed.

Jack's speech proved a tear-jerking hit, leading into the party by BK Discos, who delivered an evening of crowd-pleasing numbers.

"The whole day was amazing," reflects Sophie. ""Plus, I loved planning and making every single bit!"

While on the subject of planning, Sophie is replete with advice for other couples. "Be prepared: I had lots of ideas of things to create and fortunately did them in advance - my whole dining room was full of handmade things. Time goes so very quickly!"

"Also, have a video made!" she urges. "At the time it doesn't seem very important, but when you look back, it brings back really good memories."
