No Place Like Home

Self-confessed "Christmas-crazy" Melanie received a very special surprise present when Blakey presented her with a mysterious box on Christmas Day 2012. "It was an old gun cartridge box which was slightly alarming (not the UGG boots I was expecting!), and, after opening several more boxes within, I eventually happened upon a little black box with 'marry me' written next to it and a lovely old diamond solitaire ring inside," she recalls.

The couple were fortunate to have the perfect venue at their disposal in the form of Melanie's parent's farm near Trispen. "We decided drinks on Mum's lawn and a marquee in the field opposite the farmhouse would be our dream scenario and were so lucky to be able to make it happen," she comments.

A true celebration of all the things they love, their wedding was an entirely homespun affair featuring antique cut glass and mercury glass touches, old furniture, wooden floors, mix and match flowers, lots of hessian and a bird motif which was woven through many of the details. "I love anything old and knew I wanted to give our day a vintage feel, but also be true to our country roots so it had to have a touch of the rustic about it too," says Melanie, who made all the signs, bunting and decorations herself. "I wanted to make our wedding different by going to town on the details and making as much as I could myself."

Another recurring theme of the day was cake. "I love making cake and Blakey loves eating cake so we decided on this as our table theme," she comments. "I was extremely lucky to have a mother-in-law talented and crazy enough to agree to make a different cake for each of the nine tables!"

Melanie dazzled in her Jenny Packham gown, while her bridesmaids looked a vision of prettiness in blush dresses from Twobirds. Rejecting a 'matchy-matchy' approach, each of the bridesmaid bouquets and buttonholes were distinctive in design, while drawing on elements from Melanie's bouquet.

Armed with vintage bus tickets, guests arrived via King Harry Coaches at St Clement Church where the emotional ceremony took place. Back at the farm, everyone tucked into scrumptious canapes on the lawn before settling into the marquee where a delicious buffet of cold meats, salads, pasta dishes and new potatoes was completed with a tantalising trio of puddings.

The evening reception kicked off in style courtesy of JDS Discos who delivered a popular party playlist, which saw guests dancing non-stop into the small hours.

"My favourite moment was looking out of my bedroom window as we got ready and seeing the guests arrive," recalls Melanie. "It suddenly dawned on me that, after all this work and hubbub, people were arriving to our wedding day and it sent a shiver down my spine. I was so excited."

DIY bride Melanie encourages other couples to get stuck into making their decorations. "It's really rewarding and it will mean that your day is different from any other. There's inspiration everywhere if you keep your eyes peeled."
