Real Wedding at Trebah Gardens, Cornwall

A Secret Garden Soiree

Francesca and Neil tied the knot exactly seven years after their first date. "We got set up by Neil's cousin and his wife. On the day of our first date, Neil sent flowers to my work and then took me for a meal in Falmouth," recalls Francesca. When the Icelandic ash cloud foiled Neil's plans to propose on holiday in Turkey, Paignton became the less exotic - but nevertheless romantic - backdrop. "He finally proposed after walking the whole length of the seafront and nearly back again!"

The couple chose the beautiful setting of Trebah Gardens for their reception. "I absolutely love this place. We love to walk our dogs at Trebah so it made sense to be somewhere we knew well," says Francesca. The setting inspired many of the details of the day, including the natural wood and textures in the decorations and the tables named after places at Trebah such as Polgwiddon Cove. The colour scheme was a classic palette of royal blue and ivory.

As a hair stylist at Number 8 Hairdressing in Truro, Francesca revelled in spending the morning of the wedding with her close friends from the salon who ensured the bridal party's hair looked gorgeous. "It really did mean the world to me and was also the reason I was so chilled that morning!" she comments.

A medley of agapanthus, cool water roses and ivory gerbera woven with delicate butterflies made for pretty-as-a-picture flowers - and the perfect accessory for Francesca's stunning gown. She and her bridesmaids completed their ensembles with bespoke jewellery from Papillon Rouge.

Francesca describes walking into the church as her favourite moment. "I was so nervous and emotional, then I saw Neil and felt completely calm and relaxed - that was the best feeling!"

After the ceremony at St Gluvias Church in Penryn, guests were whisked to Trebah in a coach from King Harry Coaches. Wandering down to the private beach, they tucked into canapes washed down by Pimm's and ales, while playing games and building sandcastles.

Trebah served up a feast of local food, which included the likes of crayfish tail salad, butternut squash soup, roast beef, salmon cheesecake and citrus tart. In the evening, Kris Kool belted out a playlist of party favourites while revellers munched on pasties and wedding cake, which Francesca made herself.

Major Hibbert, who purchased Trebah in the 1980s and made it into a sub-tropical garden before giving it to the trust, made a special point of meeting the newly-weds. "He wanted to meet us and wish us a happy life together. I thought this was really lovely of him," comments Francesca.

"No matter how long you have planned your wedding, the week leading up to your wedding will be busy, so just accept things might go wrong or change plan and don't waste time getting stressed," affirms Francesca. "On the day, you really won't notice anything but each other; remember it's about starting a new chapter of your life with your best friend - not the tiny details of the seating plan!"
