Wedding at Philleigh Way, Cornwall

In The Key of Love

Eileen and Emily opted for the country idyll of Philleigh Way for their alfresco celebrations

"We both knew that we wanted to get married and it was a bit of a race to see who would propose first!" says Eileen, who met Emily at work in 2007. A lyrical proposal on top of Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath saw musician Emily and her band perform a song, which she had written for Eileen, before whispering those magical words at the endnote.

An idyllic cookery school set within the picture-perfect climes of a traditional farm on the Roseland Peninsula, Philleigh Way was the ideal choice of venue for the pair. "It has the most stunning views overlooking the estuary, rolling fields and gorgeous woodland," explains Emily. "You couldn't ask for a better location!"

Natural colours and tones lent a simple, rustic aesthetic, which complemented the setting, while arrangements of lavender and eucalyptus scattered throughout the marquee enhanced the beautifully fragrant celebration space. A literary theme carried through the decor, from the table plan - an array of hanging bottles with a book title on each - to the book in question taking centre stage on each table.

Both Emily and Eileen wore vintage lace dresses, with Emily donning a black 1940s' cocktail dress and Eileen opting for a more classic style 1950s' cream tea dress.

The lawn ceremony took place in a picturesque setting, with sweeping country views, guests seated on hay bales covered in hessian and an aisle lined with pale blue delphiniums. Following the vows, guests mingled over Prosecco and canapes including crab claws, buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomato skewers and spicy Cornish lamb and mint koftas. "George and James, who run the cookery school, provided everything on site, which meant the food was completely fresh, locally sourced and delicious," says Eileen. The indulgence continued with a full hog roast served with a range of sides, a selection of Cornish cheeses and homemade French dessert.

The evening saw a multitude of wow-worthy moments, including a special performance by Emily, who performed her proposal song, and a set by Fierce County, a band that she plays in. "They performed a song which they had secretly planned with all our guests so that the chorus was sung to us by everyone in the marquee. It was incredible!" reminisces Eileen. "The singing was completely overwhelming and definitely a highlight of the day."

DJ Michael McCormack's mix of rock and roll and hip-hop saw guests grooving into the small hours, while a fabulous firework finale, accompanied by Handel on the French horn, provided another showstopping highlight.

The newly-weds' grand exit saw them driven across the fields to a log cabin by the estuary where a wood-burning stove and a treat-filled hamper made for a wonderful way to end the day.

"Remember to spend some time together without discussing your wedding - it can easily take over!" says Eileen. "And remember that it should be fun to organise! We really enjoyed planning our wedding but could tell that it could be stressful if we allowed it to be."
