Garden Party

Jessica and Matt's garden-inspired extravaganza at Launcells Barton

There was an instant connection when Jessica and Matt first met at a house party hosted by mutual friends. "When talking to Matt for the first time it felt like we were the only people in the room," Jessica recalls.

The couple had their hearts set on getting married by the sea - and it was at Launcells Barton, near Bude, where they discovered their "perfect venue that combined everything we wanted: it was close to the sea with a barn, manor house, farm and garden."

They chose a theme of 'wilderness meets country garden'. "We love Wilderness Festival and by coincidence got married on the day of the festival," says Jessica. "We chose pale blue with flashes of colour as our colour scheme."

Gorgeous florals were key to the styling, and a flower arch around the arbour and a dramatic hanging floral centrepiece in the barn accompanied flowers from Matt's parents' and their neighbour's gardens, which were arranged in milk churns and watering jugs around the venue. Jessica accessorised her Charlie Brear gown with a beautiful flower crown and an oversized bouquet of pale pink and peach blooms and foliage.

Guests arrived to drinks served in the courtyard before making their way to the picturesque walled garden for the ceremony beneath the arbour. After enjoying more bubbly and quail's eggs and broad bean pte canapes, everyone settled in the beautifully dressed barn for a vegetarian-friendly feast featuring butternut squash ravioli with buttered sage and risotto torte (with pies for the meat-lovers!). "Everyone then went outside to eat homemade Eton mess and brownies, which Matt's mum had expertly crafted for nearly 100 people," says Jessica. Her cousin, Rupert Davies - otherwise known as Maigret Junior - provided the evening tunes as revellers tucked into a stack of cheese and Cornish pasties.

"After vowing that we wouldn't have speeches as they are often unimaginative and predictable, it was truly delightful to be taken by surprise by novel anecdotes of our other halves during the speeches," reveals Jessica when asked to pinpoint a lingering memory form her day.

She is also replete with advice for other couples. "Just enjoy it!" she urges. "Every married couple I know begrudged the hours of planning at the time but had withdrawal symptoms when there was no more planning to do!" She adds: "And don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. The initial photographer we had set our sights on recommended the one we chose as she was busy - and we loved his work."
