Something clicked when Noeleen clapped eyes on Derek back in the summer of 2003. Noeleen had started working in the family dive centre, Aquanauts, when Derek, who had decided to take up diving again after a break, turned up on the doorstep. “We became great friends,” says Noeleen. “Two years ago was the first time we had both been single at the same time since we'd met. We realised we both wanted to be more than friends and haven't been apart since.” A proposal followed during a riverside picnic amongst the bluebells in Plymbridge Woods.
“As we are both divers and hold all things nautical dear to us, we chose lighthouses, which Derek has a slight obsession over, as our theme,” explains Noeleen. A lighthouse motif featured on the homemade stationery, the tables were named after West Country lighthouses and sea creature wine glass charms made for fitting favours.

The silver and cream colour scheme complemented the vibe of the celebration perfectly; the bridesmaids wore long silver dresses while the men’s navy tail coats were punctuated with silver waistcoats and ties. Created by Noeleen’s stepmother, the stylish flower arrangements were a medley of white and cream blooms with silver green foliage.

Noeleen took her vows in an elegant strapless dress with a ruched skirt during the moving ceremony at St Andrew’s Church. “We spent the whole ceremony either laughing or crying,” she reflects. The reception followed in the idyllic setting of Langdon Court, where the newlyweds arrived in a 1936 Austin Tourer and mingled with their guests in the sunshine while tucking into Pimm’s and canapés.

A laidback barbecue of local meats and seafood served with salads and potatoes followed, while the show-stopping wedding cake – a tower of cupcakes decorated with sea creatures and a scuba diving bride and groom crowning the top tier – made for a novel and delicious dessert.

After the first dance to Snow Patrol’s ‘Just Say Yes’, local DJ Northern Lights ensured guests partied into the early hours, while a spectacular fireworks display by Celebration Pyrotechnics – which Noeleen had secretly saved up for as a surprise for Derek – made for a dazzling finale to the day. The pair shortly departed for an epic three-week road trip around California and Nevada.

“The most memorable part of the day was our trip from the church to Langdon Court in our beautiful vintage car,” reflects Noeleen. “We sipped champagne while we cruised along the coastal roads, with people cheering as we drove past.”

“Try to add your own personal touches where possible,” is her advice to other couples. “It not only helps to keep costs down, but gives your wedding a more unique feel as well as providing special time together in the lead up to the wedding.” She also recommends opting for bespoke jewellery, “We all have unique handmade jewellery to treasure as a reminder of a fabulous day.”
