Kerry’s creative and incredibly romantic proposal took place during Mhairi’s 30th birthday celebrations. “He gave me a box that contained several little parcels. The first thing that I opened was a guidebook to Fiji and concealed within were two flights there!” she recalls. “The next one was an antique diamond and sapphire ring. Folded inside was a reading from ‘The Prophet’ by Kahlil Gibran on marriage.”
They both instantly fell in love with Cornish Tipi Weddings. “We wanted somewhere where we could have the ceremony and reception together in a relaxed environment, and the venue had the added benefit of having all our friends there for the weekend,” says Mhairi.
The wedding weekend began in earnest on the Friday evening; on arrival, friends and family mingled over barbecues and fires outside their tipis and some enjoyed a pre-wedding dip in the lake the next morning.

Mhairi wore a lace Novia D'Art gown – a lucky find in a London charity shop – accessorised with delicate flowers in her hair. The ceremony in the beautifully decorated pavilion was a particularly precious moment for the couple. “The venue made the ceremony really intimate and so unique,” reflects Mhairi. Afterwards, the newly-weds ventured to the lake where they enjoyed a private moment of boating before joining guests for drinks.

Dinner was a feast of crudités, salmon, quiche and several different types of salad. “For the evening we asked everyone to bring either cake or cheese and had a special tipi in the reception field dedicated to this – it was very popular!” says Mhairi.

Local Celtic band, Black Friday, kept guests dancing into the early hours, and the weekend was rounded off with a barbecue and film in the marquee the next day.

“Get as much help as possible from friends and family,” Mhairi advises other couples. “Our wedding would never have been possible on our budget without the blood, sweat and tears invested by close friends and family.” She adds, “Go local – it's generally better, cheaper and more authentic.”
