Something Blue

It was definitely a case of home sweet home for Caroline when she stumbled across Joe's surprise proposal scene.

It was definitely a case of home sweet home for Caroline when she stumbled across Joe's surprise proposal scene. "We'd just moved into our new house, it was a beautiful May weekend, the kitchen doors were open into the garden and when I walked in my favourite song was playing," she reminisces. "Before I knew it, he was down on one knee. I've never been so shocked in my life and burst into tears before I'd even had a chance to say yes!"

Carthew Farm near Wadebridge - "a well hidden secret with beautiful views over the Camel Estuary" - proved the perfect setting for their character-filled, rustic-themed day.

Wild flowers, hessian table runners and letterpress menus, invites and table names set the rustic mood, and the blue colour scheme was beautifully carried by the striped blue and white marquee and eye-catching bridesmaids' dresses. As a personal touch, the frocks and Caroline's lace gown were handmade by Jo Irvine, one of the bridesmaids.

Following the service at St Breoke village church, champagne and traditional Cornish canapes greeted guests before they meandered to the nearby marquee for the lip-smacking wedding breakfast.

A fabulous feast of Cornish pork sausages finished in whisky, wholegrain and honey, along with pot roast leg of Cornish lamb with port, redcurrant and pomegranate sauce proved a palate-pleasing highlight. Finishing the feast with French panache, the cake took the form of the traditional sweet, croquembouche, which was served as pudding with mixed berries, dark chocolate sauce and a rum butterscotch sauce.

Joe's speech provided the highlight of the day for Caroline - "I've never been so proud in my life," she comments - while guests had a memorable surprise in the form of the first dance.  "We had dance lessons so I was really nervous, but it was great. We danced to Fleetwood Mac's 'I Wanna Be With You Everywhere,'" she says. After an "amazing" performance from live band Hot Pursuit, Caroline's DJ friend took to the helm, keeping the party alive until the event culminated in a grand bonfire gathering.

"It was the most beautiful day, the sun shone and in the evening we all watched a fantastic sunset over the Camel Estuary," summarises Caroline.

Offering up her top tips, Caroline says it's about the pre-planning. "Staying at or near the venue for the week before meant there was no last minute rush. Using an old blackboard for the table plan meant we could easily change it when someone was ill at the last minute." She advises couples also consider the timings of the day. "Don't leave too much time between the ceremony and wedding breakfast; people get bored after a couple of hours standing up and making conversation!"
