Thanks to some mutual matchmaking friends, Dave and Julie bonded at a Scissor Sisters’ concert in 2006. At the time, Julie was living in Torquay with her daughter Chloe-Rose, while Dave was residing in Mevagissey with his five children, Laura, Becca, Beth, Liam and Emily. After a series of visits, Julie and Chloe-Rose moved to Cornwall and a Christmas morning proposal followed on the sands of Watergate Bay in 2008. Another move was on the cards, however, and the family moved to Torquay just a few weeks before the wedding!
The diamond solitaire engagement ring inspired the sparkly wedding theme, complemented by ivory and a splash of vibrancy from the red and pink roses.
Swing music from The Half Quartet was the stirring soundtrack as guests arrived for the ceremony, which was held in the conservatory before gorgeous views across the gardens; Chloe-Rose’s reading from a poem by W.H. Auden, Julie’s favourite poet, proved a particular highlight. The newly wedded pair walked out to claps and cheers, marking the union with a champagne toast.

Keeping all palates satisfied, guests tucked into a buffet which included honey and mustard glazed gammon, sliced sirloin of beef with mini Yorkshire pudding and horseradish cream, warm tranche of smoked salmon with aioli, fricassee of chicken and wild mushrooms, mushroom stroganoff and vegetable lasagne. Chocolate marquise and lemon tart made for lip-smacking desserts.

The couple had a surprise during the speeches when Beth took to the floor and gave a rendition of their lives together so far. Casino Select brought a competitive edge to the proceedings and local singer Nick Hayman performed a play list of party classics – including Scissor Sisters of course – which got everyone dancing. As the revelry drew to a close, everyone ventured into the grounds to release a romantic array of glowing Chinese lanterns.

Julie and Dave have lots of tips for couples planning their nuptials, “Plan, plan, plan and write lists of everything! Buy all the wedding magazines you can as they are an invaluable source of information.” They add, “Your photos are a lasting reminder of the day so book a photographer that you are comfortable with and can really relate to. And of course, relax and thoroughly enjoy the day!”
