Emily and Mark grew up in the same town and finally got together six years ago, when Emily had returned home for Christmas. “I was living in London at the time so we saw each other mainly at weekends for quite a while until we decided to go travelling to New Zealand together,” she says. A move to Bristol and an engagement followed “after a romantic proposal by a radiator in Wales!”

Emily wore a silk chiffon gown by Geisha Designs accompanied by an ostrich feather shrug. After the ceremony at the Holy Ghost Church in Exmouth, everyone returned to Emily’s parent’s garden in Woodbury Salterton where a series of tipis from World Inspired Tents provided a stunning reception venue.

Emily and her mum arranged the white chrysanthemums, orange gerberas, blue thistles and alstroemeria flowers. With no theme as such, a simple display of fairy lights decorated the tipis, with leaves and flowers scattered throughout. An open fire in the middle and tea lights on the tables added to the relaxed ambience, the details courtesy of Emily’s designer brother-in-law.

“Food and wine was definitely one of the most important elements to us,” comments Emily – and the decadent wedding breakfast from Dartmoor Kitchen certainly hit the spot. There was sea bass to start, followed by pork belly, and apple crumble and crème brûlée. Tom's Pies (made by Tom from Dartmoor Kitchen) proved a popular offering in the evening together with chocolate brownies lovingly made by Emily’s sister, which served as their wedding cake.

“Music was important to us too and we wanted something upbeat that would appeal to everyone, without heading down the traditional wedding band route”. Eclectic band ‘The Zen Hussies’ rocked the dance floor with their unique swing, ska and boogaloo sound.

“The food and the band were definitely highlights and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed them,” Emily reflects. “The tipis looked amazing and created a really intimate atmosphere.” She has one word of advice for future brides and grooms: “Skip the first dance – it's just humiliating!”
